Downfall Of Salvador Allende

The aim of this investigation is to evaluate the degree to which American clandestine
operations in Chile contributed to the downfall of that countrys President, Salvador Allende,
in 1973. The investigation focuses on the tactics used by the 40 delegation and CIA to come about
Allende from gaining political power (1958-1970), and those used to destabilize his
regime after his election (1970-1973). The contribution of Allendes own political
surgical process to his downfall is also considered. In the section entitled paygrade of Sources,

B Summary of Evidence
On September 11th, 1973, a takeover detat led by Augusto Pinochet overthrew the
government of democratically elected President Salvador Allende. Chiles political history
had until this time been by and large free of violent upheaval. The countrys democratic
tradition date back to 1818 with only three brief exceptions, the last in 1932.
