Linh Luu March 18, 2012 APUSH Position Paper 10-A The Populists The Peoples party, fail known as the Populists emerged in the early 1890s when the Farmers Alliances and the Knights of outwear joined forces. The Populists represented westerners and southerners who believed that U.S. frugal policy favored eastern businessmen instead of the nations farmers. These frustrated farmers attacked Wall Street and the gold trust. They ultimately called for nationalizing the railroads, telephone, and the telegraph; instituting a graduated income task; and advocated sluttish and unlimited coinage of silver. By the 1890s, Populist politicians were logical argument that the growing power of large, national corporations was threatening to undermine free enterprise and our democracy. They charged that there was a conspiracy betwixt these dominant corporations and the government to enrich the wealthy and large corporations at the expense of farmers, small businesses, and the American worker. Socially, politically and economically, they were true. Socially, the farmers, laborers and small corporations seemed as though they were being victimized by an oppressive economic and political system.
The severe depression and wage cuts only built the Populists argument, and the federal official government was doing next to nothing to try and process these farmers. The panic of 1893 led to the Pullman return of 1894 (cut wages) when the workers finally struck back. The Pullman strike resulted in workers overturning Pullman cars and stopped traffic from Chicago to the Pacific coast. What showed that the federal courts were on siding with banks and big businesses was when the American Federation of assiduity declined to support the Pullman strikers.
