Reading was the just about important thing to him at this moment in his life. The prison would have cut off the lights at night and hinder with Xs reading. There was a small light that put a glow into his room so when it was time for the lights to be turned out, X used this glow to pass his reading and when the guards came around he would fake sleeping.
X says reading had changed forever the course of my life. Reading changed him because the more he read the more things he learned about the world. With every book his knowledge grew.
