An Analysis of Cinematography and Mise-en-Scene in The Shawshank Redemption
The Shawshank Redemption (1994, Frank Darabont) is a film exploring the understructures of hope, entrapment, isolation corruption and crime. Very too soon on in the scene, the status of the characters are established through the use of costume as we see the convicts wearing noisome overalls and the guards in full uniform, along with batons and guns which again reinforce how the convicts are poorly treated and how theyre longing for freedom, not just now physically but also psychologically.
The mid shot where Andy looks at Captain Hadley (Clancy Brown) intrigued by what hes saying forebodes that he is going to get involved (see figure 2), creating excitement inwardly the audience as they can guess what is going to march on next. As Captain Hadley is about to push Andy off the roof, a point of view shot is used very effectively (see figure 3) as the audience feel involved and places them in Andys position.
