Charles devil was born on 7 February 1812, in Landport, Portsmouth, in Hampshire, the second of eight children to John Dickens (1786–1851), a clerk in the Navy Pay daub at Portsmouth, and his married woman, Elizabeth . Charles Dickens was happy in his life, although his marriage, which lasted twenty-two years. By the time he wrote Great Expectations, Dickens was separated from his wife and was involved in a trying affair with a young actress. Perhaps as a consequence, the determination Dickens wrote for Pip and Estella (in which the two characters presumably never reunite) was not a happy one. But an editor convinced Dickens to dislodge his novels conclusion to the sunnier one which now remains. Many, like the British playwright George Bernard Shaw, were disappointed with this new ending. Shaw said of the book, Its beginning is unhappy; its ticker is unhappy; and the conventional happy ending is an outrage on it.
Great Expectations is written in the genre of bildungsroman or the path of book that follows the story of a man or woman in their quest for maturity, usually starting from childhood and ending in the main characters eventual adulthood.
The story takes place in 19th century in England. Nineteenth century England had flourishing cities and emerging industries. Machines made it possible for those with money to invest to win great profits, especially with an abundance of poor people who were volition to work: long hours at bard or exigent jobs for little pay.
