Literature can create and consolidate dominant ideas close to gender, but it can as well as criticise and undermine them. 
Introduction
In order to discuss this statement I will engagement as primary sources Spark., The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and Wilde, The impressiveness of Being earnest. Some secondary sources will be also necessary to understand how the importance of gender has been considered through the archives of English Literature amongst the different modes. Specifically in this search I will treat how the gender issue has been displayed in Drama and Novel genres.

To begin with, The Importance of being Earnest is a play written by Oscar Wilde which was first performed on 14 February 1895 at St. Jamess Theatre in London. This was a supernumerary moment in history. As the end of the Century was so close, a lot of upstart cultural movements were taking place, particularly in the most significant cities in Europe, and London was not an exception.
The change of Century was also relevant for political movements and new social points of views. Women in the English Victorian Era were considered to be in charge of the house duties; how to govern the house, raising the children, hiring governesses…, turn men were considered as the productive part of the family.



They were supposed to be able of taking care of their families by earning enough coin not only for sustain their houses, but also for maintaining an important status in connection. Men were the ones who picture the way their families were considered in such a constrained society.
Consequently, what Wilde successfully did in his shape (The Importance of Being Earnest) was a realistic picture of the society in which he had to live. But not only that, he also managed to create this picture in a satiric way by writing a comedy of tact that was one of his greatest successes in the English drama plays of his époque.
