He doesn’t have many protagonists which becomes unornamented throughout the book. He only seems to hang out with Pickles and Dumby Red. Gary tries to avoid his father as much as possible be generate he does not like him and believes his father will try to arrive an argument.
BP 2: It becomes apparent that Gary does not fit in when he’s asked if he is a friend’s with the Nunga’s and Gary answers no. He says no because it is looked down upon in his golf-club to be friends with the Nunga’s. At this point in the story he is shown not showing everyone his true personality rather conformist to what other people commend he should be like.
BP 3: Eventually the circumstances that Gary is placed in forces him to finally turn down what he is told to do. A reason that forces Gary to resist is Dumby’s death. It has a big impact on him because it was his only real friend and the fact that someone who he knows very well was the cause of his death. One very obvious show of Gary resisting is standing up to his father. This happens very late in the book.
BP 4: I think Gary achieves a lot throughout this novel. He is first seen as a person who does what other people tell him to do even though he may not equate with it. At the end, he is seen as a self-confident man who doesn’t care what other people think of him.
